Mekaila is a graduate student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, pursuing a Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She graduated in May 2021 from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Communications Studies.
With a deep-seated passion for mental health advocacy, Mekaila is driven by both her personal experiences and her commitment to helping others heal. As a future clinical mental health counselor, Mekaila desires to work with individuals who have experienced trauma related to receiving and adjusting to a mental health diagnosis, as well as situational trauma such as abuse, neglect, and rejection. She is interested in integrating her background in music and communications with her counseling work through the lens of Expressive Arts Therapy.
Mekaila’s counseling approach is influenced by Reality/Choice Therapy, Adlerian Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Her future aspirations include becoming a licensed clinical mental health counselor specializing in Expressive Arts Therapy, while later earning a doctoral degree in mental health counseling, with a focus on researching teenage, adolescent, and young adult women diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, and other neurological disorders. Her passion for mental health advocacy is fueled by her heart's desire to help others heal, while also believing there is purpose behind the pain that can be transformed into support and healing for others.
