Shelby (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC). She has a B.A. in Psychology with a Social Work minor from North Carolina State University (2013) and a M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a Child and Youth concentration from UNC-Greensboro (2016). Shelby obtained a certification in Play Therapy from UNC-Charlotte in May 2021 and plans to eventually become a Registered Play Therapist (RPT).
Shelby has experience working with children, teens, and adults in a variety of settings. Her previous job at a non-profit focused on supporting young adults transitioning out of the foster care system. She has experience working with individuals presenting with depression, anxiety, self-injury, trauma, relational and familial conflict, ADHD, identity conflict, LGBTQ+ specific issues, and life transitions. Shelby strives to provide affirming services to individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community. She also provides Child-Centered play therapy for kids between the ages of 3 and 10 as well as parent/guardian consultations focused on emotional and/or behavioral concerns from the lens of Child-Parent-Relationship-Training. Shelby has extensive training in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to assist children and teens who have experienced trauma. She has also been intensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and incorporates DBT concepts and skills into her work.
Shelby aims to create a welcoming, non-judgmental space to support clients on their journey to fostering positive change, healing, empowerment, and self-acceptance. She utilizes DBT, CBT, mindfulness, inner child healing, and Person Centered/Humanistic theories to support her practice and to ensure that she is honoring each client’s individual needs within the therapeutic relationship.
